New York law requires insurance companies to charge everyone in any particular place from age 19-64 the same price. This means that if they were to offer you insurance for less than $250 per month, then they would have to offer it at the same price to customers who were 64, in horrible health, and in need of millions of dollars of treatment, so they would lose money. Unfortunately, the only solutions are (a) move to another state, or (b) get a job with a company that provides insurance to its employees.

This is long but it barely touches the surface of your question.

Find a local independent agent and go talk with them. This person will be able to explain a complicated subject that we don't have enough room here to explain. They can also help you find a plan that is suitable for your situation. They don't charge you anything for the service.

The quote is the estimated premium that you will pay monthly.

The insurance company will not help you find a doctor. Depending upon the plan you will have to go to a doctor in the network. The agent will explain networks and may suggest doctors or can help you find one.

Normally, you don't file a claim, the doctor's office does when you visit him. The agent will be able to explain this also.

Dental is completely different and not included with most plans. Some companies will have dental as an option and the agent can assist there as well.

You have three options with dental.

    1. Insurance – Depending upon the policy: cost $30-$60 per month. You pay a $50 deductible first, they have an annual maximum that they'll pay per year of $750 – $1500, they have a waiting period up to 18 months for major work and then you're paying 50% of the charges. Example – average cost for a root canal in my area is $829. With insurance you pay $414 after paying 18 months of premium (around $800 or $900). Advantage – you can use any dentist with most plans.

    2. Discount plans – Cost – $5-$12 per month. No deductible, no annual maximum and no waiting periods. Also, hardly any dentists will accept the plan and when they do you MIGHT get a 10% discount, which is about the same discount you can get by paying cash. Example – average cost for a root canal in my area is $829. With discount plans you pay around $746. Be very wary of these plans because most are scams. The people that sell these plans have little or no knowledge about health & dental insurance and do not need a license to sell them. The plans are not regulated by the state so you have no recourse when you have problems. Some states are starting to ban these plans from being sold. Here is an informative link http://www.insurancejournal.com/news/west/2006/11/22/74554.htm concerning these plans.

    3. Fee for Service discount plans – Cost $7-$15 per month. No deductible, no annual maximum and no waiting periods. Many dentist will accept the plan (check providers first before signing up with any plan). When you use the plan there is a set fee that the dentist will charge you. Example – average cost for a root canal in my area is $829. With fee for service plans you pay as little as $404.

I'm an insurance agent and my personal plan is the fee for service plan. I got mine here http://www.dpbrokers.com/default.aspx?locationid=20349 specifically the Aetna Dental Access plan but which one you get depends upon your area and comparing the fee schedule to find the best for what you need covered.

take into considerations the coinsurance and copays, if your works provides a plan where its a high premium and high deductible, and high copays and the individual plan has better copays then it may be best to get individual plans. you will be taking the baby every 2 ,months for the 1st year. also some plans well baby visits are 100% covered and only visits for when he is sick you have to pay the copay & co-insurance. Babies can get sick a lot so if your wrk plan or individual plan has high copays it may not be best. i see a high copay being more than $20.00. and if you have to pay more than 10% in co-insurance. thats is always on top of your premium. until you meet the deductible which can take a long time unless the baby has some major charges.

You're right. Once people start acting like consumers, normal pricing will return. Then, we won't even need Obamacare. It's a twofer!

If you haven't had your baby yet you should consider the group option to err on the side of caution. Laws vary by state, but in NC an insurance company is required to cover a newborn if the parent currently has a policy and adds the newborn within the first 30 days after birth. This will protect you if your baby has any birth defects (I know you don't want to think about that).

If your baby is already born, individual health insurance policies tend to be less expensive than group policies because they are underwriten based on the applicants health whereas group policies must accept everyone.

Deciding how rich your benefits are is a personal preference. Generally, the higher the premium, the more predictable your day to day expenses are because you have higher benefits. The lower your premium the more exposed you are to a large claim.

For babies, make sure your policy covers well baby visits and immunizations as you will have alot of these in the beginning. Also, if you are a first time parent, make sure there is no limit on the number of office visits. Also make sure ER visits and urgent care have copays because you may be making some late night frantic visits to make sure your little loved one is ok.

    Congratulations.
