You need to be especially careful with your diet… runners need a lot of protein which come mostly from meat and dairy. So I would suggest eating plenty of beans and nuts for protein, and other than that just try to eat healthy, you know fruits and veggies and whole grains and all that. If you are going running then you also should be drinking plenty of water all the time so you don't get dehydrated.
If you don't have a pair of good running shoes, you should get some. If you sprinted in track then your shoes might be okay, but you will be putting a lot of miles in during cross country so you really want shoes that have good support and will last. I would suggest going to a running specialty store where the people can look at your feet to get you the best shoes.
In cross country, the races are 3 miles long, and in practice we will go up to 9 miles at the most. It varies a lot though, some schools do way longer or shorter distances. Over the summer we basically train by doing long runs up to 7 or 8 miles.
You should definitely build up distance slowly over the summer before the season. You don't want to jump in with five mile runs right away! I would suggest running every other day to start with. So 4 days a week for the first three or four weeks, and start out with maybe a mile each time. You are in good shape so it probably won't be too hard for you.
After a week of 1 mile runs, add a half mile so you are doing 1.5. Then the next week move up to 2 miles, and so on. You could go even slower if you want and add a half mile every two weeks. Whatever is comfortable for you.
When you get to 3 or 4 miles you could run 5 days a week if you'd like. The main thing is to make sure you aren't feeling a lot of pain and are not going to get injured.
Maybe you should talk to your doctor before you start doing a lot of training. They can give you more information and make sure you aren't going to hurt yourself.. plus you'll need a sports physical anyway.

You are better off sticking to your 7-8 hours a night. you're brain will function better with a good sleep.
Also are you sure you want to do this? I'm at college now and it is full on like that. I don't recommend putting yourself through this stress when you're still at high school. Perhaps you could comprimise and cut back on the tv and facebook etc but still hang out with friends.
Get a job, ask people to sponsor you, have a garage sell, or sell candy door to door, have a car wash.
All the time in the world? Then no. Tired as fuck? hell yes. but grab 10-12 hours of sleep a night. You'll live. Take protein or creatine to help you regain strength after your workouts. Will help alot. Good luck
